UMD professor developed apples for the DMV, McD’s Mambo sauce is spicy, and the Gibson is closing.

  • University of Maryland professor Chris Walsh has been studying and growing apples for more than 30 years. He has finally developed a strain that will thrive in this region. The university recently secured patents for one yellow and one red apple that are known for now as MD-TAP1 and MD-TAP2, respectively. The red MD-TAP2 (which stands for “Maryland Tree Architecture Program) is a descendant of the Fuji apple. [WTOP]
  • Axios’ Cuneyt Dil tried McDonald’s new “Mambo” sauce. It’s “spicier than I expected!” and is comparable to Thai chili sauce, he says. [Axios]
  • Swingers Crazy Golf, Serenata, Electric Cool-Aid, and Astro Beer Hall are just some of the bars where you can celebrate spooky season. [Washingtonian]
  • The Gibson was the original cocktail/speakeasy bar in D.C. when it opened in 2008. But the U Street NW haunt is closing its doors at the end of the year after a farewell New Year’s Eve party. [Washingtonian, DCist]
